Graphics Design Thinking – what is it and how to use it.

We are taking the next steps in developing the company, creating a new product, and setting up a website. In each of these cases, we try to make everything perfect. Then, based on our beliefs, we create and implement our projects. But, unfortunately, we often forget about the people, our recipients, during the entire process. What do they want and need?

What is meant by Thinking of Design?

The term “design thinking” refers to creating new products and services. It is founded on a thorough examination of the issue and an in-depth knowledge of the recipient. Design thinking’s motto is “doing not speaking” – we cannot stop at the speaking stage. For example, when running a store with prams for children and planning to create a new model, we can ask for the opinion of our current consumers – it can be a survey, form, e-mail, or a simple face-to-face conversation. Once we understand our recipient, we know what he needs, what he has, and what is still missing. For example, how does he view the topic? Given these details, we can better pinpoint the root of the problem that needs to be considered now.

Generating ideas

Likewise, after determining the problem, the next step in design thinking is looking for solutions. The so-called brainstorming of the entire team working on a given project. It is important to approach this with an open mind – quite spontaneously. We do not have to think about whether a given idea is good or bad or choose the one that belongs to us. We simply list ideas that can help you solve the identified problem.


At the prototyping stage, we do not have to create large functional projects – very basic ones that will present a preliminary outline of a given solution are enough. It could be, for example, a cardboard design. But, of course, it can even be a storyboard on a plain sheet of paper in the case of business ventures.

Thanks to this approach, we will not waste our work on a project that will ultimately turn out to be impractical, and we will use our capabilities 100%.


This is the time in the entire design thinking process in which, as the name suggests, we test the effects of work, not us, but the people for whom it was created. We hand over our ‘product’ to them and check how and if it works in reality.

Because we focus more on the recipient, our projects better meet their expectations.

When and who can use design thinking?

We use the design thinking method in many ways. Theoretically, it can work in any case. It is certainly recommended to use it when larger projects look for solutions to a given problem.

There is also no limit to who can use this solution – it can be a corporation, agency, local company, agency, or even a private person. Therefore, it does not change the fact that when going through the stages of ‘design thinking,’ it is very useful to work in a team where everyone can contribute something different.

MVP and Design Thinking

The MVP, or Minimum Viable Product, is a version of a ‘product,’ e.g., a website, that is in good enough condition to meet users’ expectations in every aspect.

We can use it for testing. By handing it over to the user, he has a chance to express his opinion. Thanks to this, we can see if any corrections will be needed.

Advantages of the Design Thinking method

We got to know the meaning and stages of design thinking … but does this method pay off?

Yes, yes. Its advantages include:

  • Design thinking requires us to look for new solutions to increase the likelihood of creating an innovative project.
  • Better matching of the ‘product’ to the needs – using empathy, we better perceive the recipient’s needs.
  • Avoiding wrong assumptions and focusing on factual information
  • Profitability of the project – carrying out design thinking analysis and testing initial prototypes will minimize costs and save us from losses in projects that have not turned out to be a good solution.

Design thinking in web design

Creating a website itself should not be difficult, but the design process, concept, etc., can cause problems. Whether we create a website for ourselves or on request, we must consider who it is for. Of course, you should take into account the target group and the persona (if we have one), but if you want to stand out from others and at the same time, not lose the proper functionality of the website, it is worth going through the stages of design thinking. This allows us to look at issues much wider and open up to new ideas. We can get their feedback during the test phase by handing over the basic website design to potential users to make corrections. If we only did this after the entire project was completed, it might be that the required changes would force us to rearrange the entire site. We will save time and money (if we commission the project to an agency or a freelancer).


Carrying out tasks and creating projects with the help of design thinking still attracts new interested parties. Because we focus more on the recipient, our projects better meet their expectations. The entire process may indeed turn out to be quite laborious, but it saves us from problems in the later stages of operation. It might seem that the design thinking method will only work when new products are created, but this is not true. It can also be used in other endeavors, even in which nothing material tangible arises. Its use is universal. However, we must remember to approach it with an open mind.
